There is a lot of business consulting companies out there that want to give you advice, the problem is they are wanting to teach you what they were taught in college courses. Would you like to have your vehicle transmission worked on by someone that has only done oil changes? Of course not!
The First Step
Is the discovery phase, where my goal is to learn your business. I want to take the time to learn as much as possible about your business from the owner and employees. This can include touring your facility, meeting with employees, analyzing the finances and reading all company materials. During this process, I will uncover the details of a company’s mission and what operations are in place.
The Second Step
Once I have developed an in-depth understanding of the company, I enter the evaluation phase, where the goal to identify the company’s strength and weakness, as well as current and foreseeable problems. I will be able to identify opportunities to grow the business, increase profits, and boost efficiency.
Perhaps a company has a strong sales team but a weak marketing department. This is a opportunity for the company to increase marketing resources to capitalize on the sales staff. During this phase it is important for me and the company’s employees to maintain open, clear communication.
The Third Step
It is important for a business owner to take my advice at this stage as constructive criticism. The owner should not take the criticism personally, as my goal is to provide objectivity and a fresh viewpoint. The owner is personally close to the business, which can be an obstacle to positive change and growth.
Once you the owner and I agree on a plan, I will enter the third phase of consulting. This is the restructuring phase, or the implementation of the plan. I will build on the assets and eliminate liabilities. We will monitor the plan’s process and adjust it as needed.
I have put in place strategies to make sure my business is running smoothly when I’m absent from the day to day operations.
Hopefully, your goal is the same as mine. Do you want to run your business or have your business run you?
